7 Simple Steps for Stress-Free Moving
You’ve signed all the contracts for your new home. And you’ve got the electricity and water supply running too. Now it’s time to settle in.
Depending on the size of your apartment or villa and the distance between your current and new residence, the moving process can span across anything between one week to one month (sometimes even more). While trying to do everything at once can get very messy, here are a few tips that will help you divide your move into different, more manageable steps.
Most people like to hire professional movers who take care of packing and unpacking, as well as dismantling and assembly of furniture, drilling, electrical connections and so much more. If you’re opting for professional help, make sure you get the best quotations from different companies and book your dates in advance.
1. Packing Supplies
For DIY enthusiasts or most of us who like to handle the entire process ourselves and just hire a pickup van for the transportation, make sure you have your supplies ready for packing. Boxes, tape, bubble wrap and markers are the basics that you need to begin with. ACE offers a variety of packing boxes in different sizes starting from as low as Dhs 6. You can also find bubble wrap, packing tape, plastic sheets, box cutter, scissors and much more on the website.
There are times you will miscalculate the amount of boxes you needed and find yourself without a box in the midst of your packing. But with our online shopping options, you can quickly place an order for more boxes and collect them from your preferred ACE store from as soon as the same day*.
2. Clean Up the Clutter
Moving homes is a great time to indulge in some spring cleaning. When you start clearing your closets, you are sure to find a number of things that you no longer need. Sell your bigger items like furniture and electronics on a classifieds website or if you have the space, you could organise a garage sale. For smaller items, like clothes that don’t fit or shoes that have worn out, donating is a great option. Giving away all of this extra stuff will trim down your moving load so you step into your new home feeling lighter (and with a motive to shop more)!
3. Boxing it Up
In order to make them easy to pack, transport and unpack, use small moving boxes are for heavier items such as books and photo albums. Medium moving boxes are ideal for mid-weight items like cookware, small appliances and decorative accessories. Finally, large moving boxes are more suitable for bigger, lightweight items like linens, pillows, clothes and shoes.
While many of us may get tempted to load up a large box with heavy items, this is a complete no-no, since it will only make it difficult if not impossible to lift it. Once packed, secure all the box openings with a wide and sturdy box tape like this one. For heavier boxes, wrapping the tape twice around the box gives it added support.
4. Division of Tasks
Classify your time for packing different items (and keep the boxes different too). Dedicated a few hours for your own clothes, kitchen and dining-ware, children’s toys and clothes, small appliances and so on. Trying to pack everything at once can lead to chaos. Divide the tasks between different family members, and even ask a few friends to help out with the move. You can surely return the favour when they plan to switch homes!
5. Label Your Boxes
Your packed boxes might be in order when you’ve finished packing at your current place. But once they get transported to your new home, you’ll find your boxes are all over the place. Which is why is it very essential to label your boxes clearly. It could be something room specific that is easily understood by the guys transporting your boxes, so they know which box goes into what room – for e.g.: KITCHEN ITEMS / CHILDREN’S TOYS / LIVING ROOM, etc. Or it could also be something that’s coded specifically for your knowledge – for e.g.: DAVE’S OFFICE (ROOM A) / FRAGILE CRYSTAL WARE (ROOM C), etc.
Make sure you pack all your delicate items – glasses, dinnerware, mirrors, etc. – separately with bubble wrap and clearly mark the boxes containing them as FRAGILE. It’s a good practice to put up a “THIS SIDE UP” sticker on the boxes so anyone handling them would be aware.
6. List Your Items
While labeling your boxes will get them to the right room, every room might have more than a few boxes which might make it difficult for you to figure out what item is in which box. For your own peace of mind, make a list of all items that go into a particular box. You don’t really need to pen down everything. There are a lot of apps in the market that can help you maintain a list of different items across different boxes, so you’ll know exactly where to look for something you need.
7. Unboxing Time
The tough part is just about to begin. While boxing everything is easy, unpacking and storing items in the right place can turn out into chaos if not handled with care. If you’re moving into a big villa, a good option would be to store all the boxes in a store room and start unpacking one by one. Since you have already made the lists and assigned it to every box, you will know exactly which one you need to start with.
However, since most of us move into medium apartments, that usually come without a spare room, a good idea would be to stack up the boxes (obviously taking care of the ones with delicate items), and start by unpacking those that will easily fit into built-in wardrobes/assembled furniture/kitchen cupboards etc. This will help you set up your storage at the same time avoid clutter of items that have no place to sit. ACE offers tons of storage options that can help you shelve your items in a neat and orderly fashion. Check out the collection here. We especially love these shelves from the Shelving & Bookcase Section.
